Custom Mood Pencil
How it works:
When your hands heat up to about 90°F (or 32.2°C), the color on the mood pencil changes to a noticeably lighter color which indicates calm and relaxation. Warm fingers will leave marks on the mood pencil. Below 90°F the mood pencil barrel color will NOT change and will be the same color all over.
It is a handy reminder to look down during the day and get a reading of your stress level by checking the color of the outside of your mood pencil. If it is all the same color, it can encourage you to relax during a stressful day. Take a few moments to close your eyes, drop muscle tension as you breathe deeply while you imagine warmth flowing down into your hands as you relax deeper and deeper. If your hands are warmer than 90°F or 32.2°C, then you will see lighter spots of color on the outside of the mood pencil wherever your hand has touched it. Mood Pencil color change can be a good sign that you are maintaining a healthy balance of both alertness and calm. You blood pressure will be lower and you will have less risk of headaches and other stress illnesses. Mood pencil can be used over and over depending on how much you sharpen pencil.
These make a great handout for schools, health clinics, HR, EAP, business, etc. People love to use pencils to check stress levels.

How hand temperature relates to stress. The basic rule for interpreting temperature change is simple: “Warm hands are relaxed, Cold hands are tense”. Under stress muscles tense and blood flow is restricted to the main body and shut down from the hands and feet.
When the body’s fight or flight system is activated the muscles tense, heart rate speeds up and blood flow is redirected from the extremities to the muscles, heart and vital organs. As a result finger temperature can show changes of 5 degrees or more in seconds as you prepare to fight or flee a dangerous situation. Our bodies perceive everyday stressors (traffic, deadlines, money, etc.) as an emergency flight or fight event. The amount of temperature change depends on the stressor or problem and how you react to it.
